Farmers have been showing up on the silver screen for decades (check out Modern Farmer’s great list of fictional farmers). One of the first films to be produced in Technicolor, The Wizard of Oz, begins with Dorothy sulkily daydreaming on her grandparent’s Kansas farm. From classics like The Grapes of Wrath to the oft-quoted Field of Dreams, farmers are embedded the history of cinema. Although they still appear in some fictional capacity these days, documentaries that explore aspects of the food industry and food movements have become increasingly popular, reflecting a desire for more information about the role that farmers play in raising or producing food.
Joining the ranks of agriculturally-themed films is Farmland, a documentary that follows six American farmers and ranchers in their 20s. Farmland seeks to tell a first-hand story of agriculture from the people who live it every day and demonstrate that farming today is a high-risk, high-reward job. Audiences will witness just what it takes for these young farmers to run their family businesses amidst tough challenges, including misguided public perceptions.
The film is directed by Academy Award winner James Moll and was supported by the U.S. Farmers and Ranchers Alliance (USFRA). In an interview with POLITICO, Moll shares part of his experience as a result of creating the film:
“I have heard so much from my friends about how unhealthy some of our food is and how we have to be careful about some of the things we buy and make the right choices, and ultimately the experience became one of fear,” Moll said. “And after making this film, that fear has subsided quite a bit.”
