How does your job support modern agriculture?
As a lobbyist and executive director of a trade association, my job supports modern agriculture through educating decision makers about what really happens on the farm as well as the current regulatory structure.
I respond to questions and misconceptions from legislators and the media on a regular basis. A recent issue dealt with spray drift and the allegation that there are no regulations to protect farm workers from drift. Working with state regulatory agencies, we walked legislators though both state and federal law that regulate drift and that protect farm workers from pesticide exposure. The fun part was explaining how aerial applicators use GPS, GIS, variable rate nozzles and other technology to ensure applications are accurate. Legislators were amazed at the level of technology involved.
